Beginning Readers Students
just beginning to learn to read are working on phonemic
awareness skills. We are practicing identifying rhyming words,
identifying the beginning sound, and changing sounds to make new
words.
Please practice rhyming words by giving them two words
and asking if they rhyme. Please practice beginning sounds by
naming things in the environment and asking what sound they hear
at the beginning. Phonetic Readers Students
who have already mastered beginning reading and phonemic
awareness skills are working on phonics skills. We have reviewed
closed syllables and CVC words. We have also review digraphs (sh,
th, ch, wh, ck, qu).
We are beginning to work on welded sounds. The welded
sounds we know are ing, ang, ong, ung, ank, onk, unk, ink, all,
am, and an. Students are practicing reading and writing words
with these sounds. They are also practicing reading and writing
sentences with words that have welded sounds.
Please look for practice pages for students to read.
Please also have them read the pages several times until they
can read without mistakes fluently. If you would like more
clarification about reading fluently, please contact me.
1st grade students
Students are working on identifying, counting objects, and
writing numbers 1-10. We are also working on identifying numbers
when they are not in sequence. 2nd grade students
Students are working on basic addition and subtraction facts. We
will begin working on ordering and comparing numbers in the
coming weeks. 3rd grade students Students are working on reviewing basic addition and subtraction facts. They are also working on identifying place value and comparing numbers. 4th grade students Students
are continuing to work on basic addition and subtraction facts.
We are also working on solving word problems. Students have
begun working on identifying place value up to the millions. We
will continue practicing place value and then begin working on
comparing and ordering numbers Students
need continued practice using writing to express their thoughts.
Older students should be able to write about a topic using an
introduction sentence, detail sentences, and a conclusion
sentence. Their writing should remain on topic, and the detail
sentences should support the introduction sentence. They should
also be complete sentences, which include a subject and
predicate, correct capitalization, appropriate
punctuation, and correct spelling. Younger students should be able to write their first and last
name, all uppercase and lowercase letters, number digits 1-10,
and begin to draw pictures with a label.
