Mrs. Carlson/Mrs. Beckman      Second Grade           Room12            708-877-2550 ext. 131    March 8, 2010

Welcome Back!

It’s hard to believe school is back in session!  I am so excited about teaching second grade this year!  I look forward to a fun-filled year full of learning!

Communication

Communication between school and home is of the utmost importance.  Therefore, I will send your child’s Weekly Folder home with a newsletter at the beginning of every week.  The letter will include what we are learning all week, important reminders, and other important news.  The folder will also contain papers completed throughout the previous week.  Some papers may require a parent signature.  Please look through them carefully.  Finally, you will find an inventory sheet in the folder informing you of your child’s behavior for the week, notice of any late or missing assignments, and a place for you to sign and comment.  I hope you will find this tool useful throughout the school year!

Another useful tool  this year is the Wolcott School assignment notebook.  Children will record homework assignments, reminders, and their behavior chart color daily in this book.  Parents need to sign the book daily.  There is also space for parents to leave a comment for the teacher.

Please feel free to contact me at school at 877-2550 ext. 131 or through email at jkcarlson98@sbcglobal.net .

Behavior

In order for this to be a successful year for the children, there needs to be a discipline policy.  The classroom rules are as follows:

1.   Respect each other and the classroom.

2.   Follow directions the FIRST time given.

3.   Keep your hands, feet, and other objects to yourself.

4.   Always use indoor voices.

5.   Always get permission before leaving the classroom.

6.   Arrive at school by 8:30 a.m. (After 4 tardies, an after school detention is issued.  Parents are responsible for transportation home.)

7.  Follow the Wolcott School handbook rules

I use a pocket chart behavior system.  Every child begins the day on green.  I begin with a verbal warning.  Next time, the child changes his or her card to yellow.  Ten minutes of recess is missed.  If the behavior continues, the card is changed to red.  All of recess will be missed, a behavior reflection form will be completed by the child, and either a phone call home or a note will be sent home.  Children are allowed to “earn” their color back by demonstrating good behavior the remainder of the day.  Children who end the day on green will get a sticker to add to their behavior card.  Once the card is filled, students will be able to choose a prize from the treasure chest.

The class, as a group, is also rewarded for positive behavior that we can SMILE about!  When “caught”

working together and behaving in a positive manner they will earn smiley faces.  Some faces may have a quick treat, music minute, or game listed on the back where students will be rewarded instantly for their good behavior.  When all of the smiley faces are earned, the children will be rewarded with a group reward such as movie and a snack, extra recess or computer time, popcorn party, etc.

Homework

Homework is important for reinforcing skills taught at school.  Homework will be assigned Monday through Thursday.  Occasionally your child may have a project or book report that will require them to use some of their weekend to complete.  Please make sure your child has a quiet place to complete his or her assignments and gets assistance when needed.  Check off assignments as completed in the assignment notebook and remember to sign it daily.

Homework folders have two labeled pockets.  On the right is for homework to complete and to store when finished. You can also put any notes for the office or me in this pocket.  On the left, you will find papers that can stay home and important notes from the office.

Lunch/Snack

Lunch is at 12:00.  Children may bring a HEALTHY snack for the morning.  Some suggestions are fruit, vegetables, cheese and crackers, granola bars, and pretzels.

SSR

The entire school is participating in SSR (Sustained Silent Reading) daily.  Second graders will silently read books of their choice for 20-30 minutes during this time.  Your child is allowed to bring a beach towel to lay on during this time.

**Supplies**

I apologize for any inconvenience, but I also need each child to bring in 2 rolls of paper towels and 2 additional wide-ruled 70-page spiral notebooks.  Thank you!

Birthdays

We can celebrate your child’s birthday at school.  We have 15 children in our class.  Children are encouraged to bring in healthy foods when bringing in birthday treats.  Please choose items that can easily be passed out.  If your child has a birthday during the summer, he or she may choose to celebrate their half birthday or pick a day in September or May to celebrate.  Please notify me in advance.
