Miss
Cole - Welcome
2009-2010
Best
wishes to the 8th grade and best of luck in your
future endeavors.
Congratulations!
Just
a reminder!
Please make
sure you check your child's homework sheet daily.
When you check the homework sheet make sure that
your child completed the work properly before you
sign it. Completing a homework sheet daily
teaches your child organizational skills and will
aid in them being successful in school.

Reading
The
students read several novels this year. The
Pigman, Animal Farm, and The
Outsiders. We will finish off the year
with the novel, The Hobbit. My goal
this year was to improve the students:
- fluency
and decoding skills.
- build
their vocabulary.
- comprehension.
- learning
different literature styles and literary
terms.
The students
made great strides this year.
- it opens a whole new world.
SPED
Reading
The
students are working in several different books
this year. These books include Word Study
Skills, Vocabulary Drills, and Reading Drills.
They are also working in the S.R.A. box, and on
the computer in Study Island which aides in all
areas and prepares them for the state tests, ISAT.
All these materials are being used to:
- improve
their fluency and decoding skills
- build
their vocabulary
- improve
their
comprehension.
SPED Math
In
math the students will start the year with review
from the previous years. This will include
addition, subtraction, multiplication, division,
fractions, decimals, exponents, geometry,
percents, and many more concepts. Then
we will start working on life math skills.
SPED
Language
We are
reviewing the different parts of speech daily.
Then we will touch on the different types of
writing and practice writing for different
purposes. The students have a spelling test
weekly. It is important that they study
their spelling work each night.
Now we are
working on the end of the year research paper.
In this lesson we will review what is required in
writing a research paper and practice those
skills. We will also write a simple paper.

Social Studies
We will be
finishing up their Social Studies books by
completing Chapters 29 and 30. The students
will be reading and discussing each section.
They will be required to take notes and answer
questions from the readings and completed
worksheet that are included in each section.
This should be a growing experience and very
rewarding.

It is always
a pleasure working with your children.
I look forward to seeing all of you next year.
Have a safe summer.
