Miss Cole - Welcome

              2008-2009

Just a reminder!

Please make sure you check your child's homework sheet daily.  When you check the homework sheet make sure that your child completed the work properly before you sign it.  Completing a homework sheet daily teaches your child organizational skills and will aid in them being successful in school.

                     Reading

The students are reading in the series, Wonders and Winners, by Focus.  They are also working in the S.R.A. box, and on the computer in Reading Plus and Study Island.  All these materials are being used to:

  •  improve their fluency and decoding skills
  •  build their vocabulary
  •  improve their comprehension.

              Math

In math we are learning how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions.  To do this the students will learn about common denominators, reducing fractions, and how to do fractions on a calculator.  We will continue to review the basic facts.  After fractions they students will learn about exponents.  For the I.S.A.T. test we will also practice writing out the steps to perform math problems.

          Language

We are reviewing the different parts of speech daily.  The students will be writing in a journal daily there thoughts about their day or on a topic that is given to them.  Also we will touch on the different types of writing and practice writing for different purposes.  The students have a spelling test bi-weekly.  It is important that they study their spelling work each night.  Also they must know the meaning of each word and should be able to use each word in a sentence.

Health

The seventh grade health class will be learn about life skills which include peer pressure, decision making, positive communication, stress, the male and female body, growth and development, drugs and alcohol, nutrition, fitness, and personal care.  We will also discuss first-aid and safety, which include communicable  and noncommunicable diseases.  The books that we will be using are available anytime if you would like to come in and view them.
