News You Can Use
October
16, 2009
I
can’t believe how fast October has gone.
We have been very busy this month learning
about transportation, spiders, fire safety and
Christopher Columbus.
We will learn about bats and pumpkins in the
next few weeks!
This week
we focused letter t and its sound.
Of course, we reviewed the letters and sounds
a, m, s, and p as well.
We are all doing a great job with letters,
sounds and sight words.
Keep up the good work!
We
now know the following sight words:

Your
child should be able to sound out the following words:

In math we
are working on counting to 15, identifying numbers to
15, writing numbers to 15, and 1 to 1 correspondence
(counting an object when its touched). We also
discussed the circle and rectangle.
We can tell what makes each one different.
Please
practice number recognition and writing numbers at
home.
In
handwriting, we have learned almost all the lowercase
letters. Please
make sure your child is forming the letters correctly!
Top down!
Many students already have bad habits that are
hard to break. If
a letter is not done correctly, encourage your child
to erase it and try again.
We also have learned that letters must be in a
certain place on lined paper. Be watchful during homework time.
We are
working hard on listening and following directions.
Simple games at home can help.
Race : Give
your child 2-3 directions.
(Go to your room, get your socks, sit on the
couch)
Time your child as
he/she completes each direction in order.
DO NOT REPEAT!
Mom/Dad
Says – Just like Simon Says… give a direction
(Mom says touch your head and say boo)
They only do it if you say Mom/Dad Says
Halloween is quickly
approaching. We
will have a Halloween Parade and a party.
The parade is outside and parents are welcome
to watch. It
will begin at 1:30 on Friday, October 30.
The parties follow the parade.
Only room parents that planned the party are
allowed to attend.
As you prepare your child’s costume, here are
some costume guidelines:
Students
will bring costumes to school and change after lunch.
Your child should be able to dress with limited
help from an adult.
No swords,
guns, weapons.
No masks.
No gory,
violent or indecent costumes.
Please
remember that this is kindergarten.
While Halloween is a “scary” time, many
costumes are inappropriate for children.
Wish List:
gently used puzzles (25- 50 pieces), gently
used games (Candy land,
Connect 4, etc.)
