Second Grade News

 Mrs. Visser’s Classroom

  NOVEMBER NEWS

Thank you for coming to Parent-Teacher Conferences.  I enjoyed talking with you about the progress your child is making in second grade.  Let’s continue to work together for a great year of learning for your child.

Our reading skills continue to improve.  This nine weeks we will be working on fluency and stopping at periods.  We will also be listening to make sure that we are adding endings to words when necessary.  Please take the time to listen to your child read.  Remember to read and record the minutes for the monthly reading calendar.  It counts as part of our reading grade and is also the way to earn a Pizza Hut certificate.  Details for a November book report will be sent home soon.

In math we are working with counting coins.  We will introduce how to count back change also.  Extra help at home counting money is always appreciated.  We also will begin two- digit addition without regrouping and then with regrouping.  Also, we are working on improving our addition skills by doing a “math 2 minute” paper each day.  The children are working hard to earn a skittle for keeping their

score the same or by improving their score.  These math facts are the foundation for many future activities.

This month in social studies we will be working on two units.  We will learn about life long ago with the Pilgrims and early settlers.  Also, we are working on a maps and globe unit.  We will be learning about a compass rose, a map key and other important map skills.  We will save many of our papers to make a map booklet.

During the month of November we will be doing various writing activities about Thanksgiving and family traditions.  We will continue to work on the two-finger check when writing, as well as adding adjectives as a way of making our sentences more interesting.  We will also work on learning how to identify nouns and verbs in sentences.

This month the children are encouraged to share with the class books from home about Thanksgiving, Pilgrims, and families.  Please remember to have your child put their name inside the book so they get the right book returned to them.

Please listen to the weather and send warm clothes including hats and gloves as the weather continues to get colder.  Most days the children will go outside for recess.

Thanksgiving Break begins with a 2:00 PM dismissal on Wednesday, November 26.  We will return to class on Monday, December l, 2008.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Visser
