7th Grade Math:

  • Please make sure your children have a TI30X calculator.  They may not be able to use it for every lesson this year, but it will be important for them to have it for many of them this year and for Pre Algebra next year.
  • In math we began the year by reviewing order of operations by asking everyone to Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally, and evaluating some simple equations.

6th Grade Science:

We start the year out with chapter 11 in the back of the book  learning about Earth Science.  We learn about the Earth's plates and how they are involved with earthquakes, volcanoes, and the formation of mountains.  We will continue on about Earth Science with weather and outer space.  During the 2nd quarter got into our Life Science unit by discussing cells, food chains, and ecosystems, life in the ocean, and we will end the unit by discussing fossils and how these are evidence of how species change over the millions of years.  Now, starting after the new year, we get into an in depth physical science unit.  We study chemistry during the 3rd quarter learning about the elements, compounds, mixtures, acids and bases.  We do many activities throughout.  We tested our rainwater and found that, using very basic techniques, that it is neutral.  During the 4th quarter we study other areas of physical science including light, sound and electricity.

7th Grade Science:

In 7th grade science we cover Life Science.  We began the year by introducing topics such as the scientific method, and tools that a life scientist would use such as a microscope.  We will begin with a study of the cell in the first book of our Life Science series called Cells and Heredity.  We finished the first quarter by discussing heredity and genetics.  During the 2nd quarter started our 2nd book of the series called Life Over Time.  Here got into how species have evolved throughout the ages.  During the 3rd quarter we get into the third book called Diversity of Living Things.  Here we look at all the kingdoms of living things starting with the simplest bacteria working our way up to the most complex mammals.  The last thing we do in our 4th book called Ecology.  Here we study the effect that we have on the environment.

Also towards the end or 3rd quarter,  we will have a presentation from a representative from  the Lights For Learning Corporation.  Here the students will learn about the benefits of the Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs.  Then the 7th grade students will be selling these light bulbs as a fundraiser.  The money will go toward their trip to Springfield.  If you are interested in buying any of these bulbs, you can see a 7th grade student this spring, or call me at the number below.
